Hurricane Life Concepts Part 3 – Managing Heat and Skeeters the Natural Way
Hurricanes are so much fun until the hurricane party is over and it is time to work, survive and work at surviving.
I used to think Essential Oils were something only used by hippies. I was wrong and I might be a hippie too.
As it turns out these 5 essential oils have made my life a lot more pleasant when dealing with the loss of A/C, too much sun and keeping gnarly pests away.
Lavender
Lavender is an all around beneficial essential oil and my personal must have. I don’t leave home without it. Lavender soothes mosquito bites quickly and smells great too.
Putting up shutters, taking down shutters and putting them back up again you are likely to get too much sun somewhere. Sooth your skin with Lavender. I usually add a fatty oil, coconut oil, to prevent sensitivity to the essential oil and make it last longer on my skin. Lavender is great for soothing many kinds of minor burns including sunburns.
Lavender eases muscle tension in head and neck. Apply on location. also promotes a restful night’s sleep. put a few drops on your pillow.
Lemon
Add a couple drops of Lemon Essential Oil to your glass of water. It is refreshing and delicious.
**Never use essential oils with plastic they are powerful and deteriorate the plastic, you don’t want to drink residue of plastic.
Lemon is a great disinfectant for countertops and as a natural safe air freshener.
Use Citrus Safely
Never put citrus oil on your skin before going in the sun, you will burn. Stay out of the sun for at least 24 hours after putting citrus oils on the skin. I have a friend that was out on a boat cutting a bunch of limes for Corona. The essential oils are in the skin of the lime and it sprays out when squeezed. She got a nasty burn, blisters and all. Be safe!
Peppermint
I find that mixing a couple of drops of peppermint with some coconut oil keeps mosquitos and ants off of my skin. They don’t like the smell and they don’t want it on their paws. In my experience, it works way better than that poisonous spray stuff. Is DEET really safe? Can not possibly be safer than peppermint!
When was the last time you had A/C is your power still out after the storm. Time to reach for the peppermint. Cool off and keep the bugs away with a few diluted drops of peppermint oil in a fatty oil will give you the sensation of eating a peppermint patty while skiing through the Alps, so seriously it helps.
Peppermint is edible, If your brand of peppermint oil says it is not for internal use. You have a synthetic. There is a better safer way to enjoy peppermint. Have you eaten too much of your hurricane rations too quickly? Hurricanes seem like a great excuse to eat a bunch of junk food because it doesn’t have an immediate expiration date. Take a couple drops of Peppermint oil internally, in a capsule or under your tongue. You can also apply peppermint oil mixed with a fatty oil directly to your abdominal area to sooth the belly ache.
Peppermint gives me a nice little pick-me-up, without the crash I get from caffeine.
Melaleuca – Tea Tree Oil
Mosquitos don’t like it, mix it with coconut oil and put it on your skin. This is another great oil for your skin after too much sun. It is okay to mix in Lavender too, how does that smell for you? Smells good, right?
Helps soothe minor skin irritations, bumps, scrapes, bruises and bruises too.
Geranium Oil
A friend of mine swears by Geranium oil for keeping horse flies and ticks away. This is not a problem on Maui so I have don’t have a personal testimony for this one but it doesn’t hurt to try it out. I will have the Geranium oil on standby when I go to the mainland.
Not a Doctor
I am going to be very careful here, I want to stay on the good side of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration):“These statements I have made have not been evaluated by the FDA. I am not intending to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease” I am sharing my personal experiences, and remedies that have helped me an those around me on my Journey. I hope that you too will experience a natural and safe way to live a healthy more comfortable life now that you know about essential oils.

Be safe during the storm, I hope you get your power back quickly. If you are fortunate enough to have a generator make sure to keep it away from any house. Never run it in the house or too close to the house. Not in the garage either. Carbon Monoxide kills and has no odor. When refueling your generator at night, fire is not a safe light source. This might seem like common sense but it happens. People get all freaked out and don’t always think as clearly as they would normally. We have an oil to help with clarity too more about that later!
